The centurion in Matthew 8:8 understood that Jesus did not need to be physically present for His authority to work. In one exchange, he gave us a masterclass in authority and faith. Let’s look at what he knew—and how he exercised it.

Rank — He knew who Jesus was.
The centurion was a military man, so he understood hierarchy. He recognized that Jesus carried authority greater than sickness, distance, circumstance, and human limitation. He wasn’t merely asking a healer for help; he was appealing to Someone with superior rank.
Rule — He understood how authority operates.
In verse 9, the centurion explains, “I also am a man under authority,” with soldiers beneath him. He knew that when legitimate authority speaks, those under it must respond. His reasoning was essentially: Jesus, if soldiers obey my command because of my delegated authority, sickness must obey Yours.
Reach — He knew distance could not diminish Jesus’ authority.
“Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Jesus did not have to enter the house, touch the servant, or stand beside the bed. His Word could reach where His physical body was not.

Don’t rush through the Word because it feels familiar. Repetition may feel boring, but repetition builds remembrance. And what you repeatedly rehearse becomes easier to recall when life shifts.
